Course Description

In this 2 hour NCBTMB approved course, Dr. Robert Gerwin, Professor of Neurology at John’s Hopkins University Medical Center and Pioneer in research and treatment of myofascial pain syndrome due to trigger points, will discuss myofascial causes of shoulder pain. We will also be learning about "TOS" or "Thoracic Outlet Syndrome". After carefully examining all the possible causes, Dr. Gerwin will identify how the neurogenic cause of thoracic outlet syndrome is rare, and how the myogenic cause of thoracic outlet syndrome is far more common. Dr. Gerwin will outline all the muscles, that when harboring trigger points causing myofascial dysfunction, can be involved in this commonly misdiagnosed shoulder problem.

In closing, Mary Biancalana will review trigger point referred patters that, in key muscles, can mimic the sensation that could be mistaken for TOS, or thoracic outlet syndrome. Upon successful completion the learner will earn (2) NCBTMB approved CE's good for license renewal.

This is a pre-recorded video-based lecture and interactive study guide, with a quiz at the end.

Learning Objectives

The Student will:

  1. Recognize how the patient will present when they have complaints that can be diagnostically proven to be true Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS) or when there could actually be muscular symptoms mimicking TOS.

  2. Know the anatomy involved in the brachial plexus.

  3. Know how to manage this condition within the scope of practice.

  4. Explain how muscles can be involved in true TOS and common myofascial mimicking of signs and symptoms of thoracic outlet syndrome.
