Shannon Goossen, AP, LMT, CMTPT owns a private practice in Jacksonville, FL. She is president of Comprehensive Myofascial Therapy Associates, established in 1996. She teaches nationally about FSM (Frequency Specific Microcurrent) and offers web based training opportunities through www.FrequenciesthatMEND.com , Most recently, in 2018 she was the lead instructor and trainer for a 3 1/2 demonstration study for the DoD to evaluate the efficacy of incorporating microcurrent and bioenergetic devices in hospital outpatient care at Nellis AFB for their chronic pain cases. She is now actively teaching for several US Air Force base hospitals that are involved in multi-center research on microcurrent combined with novel myofascial treatment techniques that has she developed. In Florida, Shannon is a Licensed Acupuncture Physician, Licensed Massage Therapist and Certified Myofascial Trigger Point Therapist. Shannon has a bachelor degree in Biology and graduated from Hendrix College in 1986. Shannon graduated from the Pittsburgh School of Pain Management (1997) and from the Classical Acupuncture Institute in 2001. She is board certified by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (Diplomate), the Myofascial Trigger Point Therapy National Board, and previously, the previously, the Academy of Integrative Pain Management (Fellow). As a recognized national expert in treating myofascial pain and dysfunction, she expanded her clinical practice by completing her AFMCP (Applying Functional Medical in Clinical Practice) certification through the Institute for Functional Medicine. This certificate allows Shannon to broaden and complete her health care modalities for her most complex patients. Additionally, Shannon has collaborated with her husband, an orthopedic spine surgeon, for over 18 years demonstrating the effectiveness of applying integrative medicine concepts in clinical practice and during pre and post-operative periods with enormous success. She is a contributing writer to two textbooks (Clinical Mastery in the Treatment of Myofascial Pain 2004, Clinical Application of Neuromuscular Techniques 2005) and has had several articles published on spinal disorders, myofascial pain and dysfunction and clinical evaluation. Many of her microcurrent cases are published in the 7 th and 8 th Annual Microcurrent Case Conference Proceedings for which her presentations were awarded 1 st place in 2013. She served on multiple boards including the Academy for Myofascial Trigger Point Therapy, the National Association for Myofascial Trigger Point Therapist executive committee (Vice President & President) from 1999-2004, the international editorial board for the Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapy (2001-2012). Additionally, She has been presenting at national meetings since 1999 and offers regular CEU workshops on subjects including myofascial pain & dysfunction, spinal disorders and rehabilitation, neurological screening and evaluation, and the use of microcurrent and bio-energetic devices in clinical practice.

Course Description

In this live broadcast hybrid learning class, Shannon Goossen teaches what to do for those people who have had post-concussive symptoms. Many times these people have difficulty managing muscle tension and myofascial dysfunction in the muscles of the head and neck. Often these clients report that it feels like they cannot even hold their head up. They also May report a sense of brain fog and difficulty organizing and utilizing the stabilization muscles in the body.

Learning Objectives

Students will:

1. demonstrate proficiency in assessing myofascial pain & dysfunction
2. be able to identify myofascial distortion as it occurs post-neck injury.
3. be able to identify postural distortions, stabilizer muscle weaknesses, and mover muscle dysfunction in the “Mover and Stabilizer muscles”
4. learn specific techniques used in applying active/dynamic manual therapy techniques to restore optimal cervical movement and function.
5. understand the characteristics of the post-concussive syndrome and the cervical myofascial component
6. list the key symptoms found with concussion and post-concussion syndrome
7. be able to identify specific myofascial pain pattern maps


Learning Outcomes

After the completion of this course the learner will be able to:

1. demonstrate trigger point massage therapy techniques for the activation & treatment of the “mover and stabilizer" muscles in the neck and shoulders.
2. use information from the course to demonstrate therapeutic techniques to resolve dysfunctional cervical motor patterns and/or fascial distortions quickly
3. apply specific active, dynamic manual therapy techniques to resolve pain and dysfunction in the shoulder and neck.

Will this class provide me with NCBTMB continuing education hours?

Will this class provide me with “Hands-on” NCBTMB continuing education hours?

Yes. NCBTMB and our State Licensing Boards have allowed live broadcast, live student participating webinars to be used as “Hands-On CE hours”. (Due to Covid-19 social distancing guidelines). You will need to be logged on and actively participating in the webinar for its entirety. You will also be required to have a “client” at your space to apply and practice the techniques. You will also be required to have a camera “on” for the demo and hands-on portions of the program so the instructor can see you and guide you to the correct application of the techniques.

 

 When does this class begin?

This class is a live-broadcast webinar via Zoom scheduled to begin at 9 am CST and you can see the date scheduled in our platform.  The student will receive the ZOOM link, once they have registered for this course within this platform. It is your job to mark your calendar for the date and time at which the live webinar will be broadcast. Since this is a distant learning and live-broadcast webinar that will count as “Hands-on” CEU, the student is required to participate for the entire broadcast in order to receive the continuing education credits. (There will be a 1-hour break for lunch)

 

What if my internet drops out and I lose the connection to the zoom broadcast?

According to the NCBTMB requirements, in order to receive the continuing education credits, the student must be actively participating for the entire duration of the Zoom webinar. Will I need to have a live “client” with me during the hands-on demonstration portion of this class?

Yes, each student will be required to have a live “client” with them during the zoom broadcast (from 10 am to 12 noon and from 1 pm to 3 pm) so the instructor can watch the student apply the techniques as presented by the instructor. The “client” can be a family member, friend, or anyone you feel comfortable with.

 

Will I receive a continuing education certificate upon completion of this course?

We will be sending an email to you with the PDF of your Continuing Education Certificate attached within 5 business days. At the completion of the course, you will receive a PDF of your CEU Certificate attached to an email.  

Be sure to save this certificate, as we will charge you $20.00 if you need another copy of it at a later date. 



Course Expiration:

Because this is a live broadcast, interactive Zoom webinar that will qualify as “hands-on” CE hours (due to Covid-19 restrictions), the course expires on the day and the hour in which the broadcast is over. There will not be a recording available to watch after the webinar is over. So each student needs to be actively participating for the entire duration of the zoom webinar broadcast.
